Mark A. Smith was born in Bayonne, New Jersey.  The fourth son of a policeman and a registered nurse, he learned early the value of family, friendship, and service to the community.  Mark and his brothers and sister grew up in a modest home on West 26th Street full of love and energy.  He attended St. Henry’s Grammar School and Marist High School, where his peers elected him as their class president.

In 1983, Mark sat for and passed a competitive test for the Bayonne Police Department.  During his 25+ year career with the Bayonne Police Department, Mark rose through the ranks from Patrolman to Deputy Chief.

He received countless awards, citations, and honors for valor and bravery in the line of duty, and he has been recognized for his selfless service to the community.

While serving as a police officer, Mark worked hard to complete his studies at St. Peter’s College, qualifying for a degree in Marketing and Management.  He went on to attend Seton Hall University, where he graduated with honors with a master’s degree in Human Resources and Development.  On November 4, 2008, Mark A. Smith was elected to serve as mayor by the voters of Bayonne.

Mark A. Smith is an active member of various law enforcement and community organizations, in which he works to make Bayonne a better place to live.  He is an active parishioner of St. Henry’s R.C. Church, where he volunteers to teach catechism to young children.

Mark A. smith is married to the former Patricia Carroll. The couple resides in Bayonne along with their two daughters.  Smith is inspired by his family to dedicate the rest of his life to serving and improving the community that has been so good to him.
